A beginner's guide to the game of golf

This is a brief introduction of the wonderful game. Join a golf lesson now to learn more about the world of golf and discover Singaporeans latest addiction.

1.    What is golf?
Golf is a sport that is deemed to be originated from Scotland. It involves a player hitting a golf ball into a hole using golf clubs in the lowest possible number of strokes. Over the years, the popularity of golf has been rising in congruence with the fame of Tiger Woods. With Singapore pros like Mardan Mamat and Lam Chih Bing getting attention on an international level, golf fever in Singapore is hotter then ever. Feeling left out? Want to pick up golf? Looking for a new challenge? Fret not, you are at the right place.

2.    How is golf played?

Golf is usually played in a flight (group) of four, on an 18 holes golf course. Players aim to achieve the lowest total score for the 18 holes, i.e. the total number of strokes used to hit the ball into each hole.  A regulation golf course is a par 72, which means that a skilled golfer will complete the 18 holes in 72 strokes, i.e. at par. 72 is the sum of the individual par strokes required to play at each hole. The 18 holes usually consists of 4 par 3s, 4 par 5s and 10 par 4s. This will add up to 4x3+4x5+10x4=72.

3.    What does birdie and bogey means?

These are terms used to describe the score for a hole. If a player hits a ball into the hole in two strokes on a par 3 hole, he has gotten a birdie. On the other hand, if he hits it in the hole in 4 strokes, he gets a bogey. In essence, for a par 4 hole:

1 stroke in the hole is an albatross (-3/3 under par)
2 strokes in the hole is an eagle (-2/2 under par)
3 strokes in the hole is a birdie (-1/1 under par)
4 strokes in the hole is a par
5 strokes in the hole is a bogey (+1/1 over par)
6 strokes in the hole is double bogey (+2/ 2 over par)
7 strokes in the hole is a triple bogey (+3/3 over par)
8 strokes and above you just feel like throwing your clubs into the pond

On extremely rare occasions, a player makes a hole in one on a par 5. That would be called a condor, a -4 for a hole.  Trust me, it is a million times more difficult than winning the toto.

4.    How can Tiger Woods hit a score of -24?

If you happen to channel surf pass Espn or Golf Channel and you see Tiger Woods winning the tournament with baffling score of -24/or 24 under par, do not be astonished. It is the cumulative score of a 4 day tournament, 4x 18 holes equals to par 4x 72= 288. So it means that he completed 4x 18 holes in 288-24= 264 strokes.

5.    What is the layout of a hole?

This picture gives an idea of the layout of a hole. The par strokes for a hole depend on the distance of the tee box from the hole. A par 3 hole usually range from 100m to 200m, a par 4 hole 280m to 450m, a par 5 hole, 400m to 600m.

Grass quality and length also varies on the golf course. The green has the shortest grass and the smoothest surface on the hole. Next would be the fairway where the grass is also short and a bit carpet grass like. The longest grass dwells in the rough, which is also a hazardous area for golfers to play the ball from.  The sand bunkers are filled with sand, obviously, and it makes it a lot harder for a golfer to hit the ball than on the fairway, so golfers usually try to avoid them.

6.    What kind of golf clubs are there?

Drivers, wedges, irons, hybrids, woods, putters you name it they have it. In short, the three main categories of golf clubs are woods, irons and putters. Woods can hit the ball the furthest and it is often used to tee off at the hole. The biggest wood is called the driver (big round head also called the big dog), which is also the longest club in the bag that hits the furthest. Take good care of your woods in case of termite infestation. Rubbish!! Woods are made of graphite, steel, titanium and definitely not wood. However, it used to be wooden eons ago.
Irons are your typical golf club with a funny looking slanted metal piece attached to either graphite or steel rods (shafts) attached. Irons can be used to tee off (when Tiger Woods’ driver goes haywire, his infamous 2 iron comes in play), and it is usually what you use to hit your second shot. It provides more forgiveness and loft (how slanted the metal head is), which enhances accuracy and consistency.  The balls fly higher and shorter with an iron as compared to a wood.  Numbers on the club refers to how far you can hit with each club. The lower the number, the lighter the club, the longer the club, the lesser the loft, the further your ball go. The higher the number, the heavier the club, the shorter the club, the higher the loft, the higher your ball flies in the air as compared to rolling on the ground and the ball carries a shorter distance.
Last but not least, when your ball is on the green, you use your putter to roll the ball into the hole. The putter’s loft is the lowest among all the clubs to enable a forward pushing rolling effect on the ball, increasing the balls sensitivity to the undulations of the green.

7.    How do I start to play golf in Singapore?

You start from Just Tee It!! Take up proper lessons as golfing fundamentals are very important in sculpting your future golf techniques. It is also one of the quickest ways for you to get a Proficiency Certificate (PC). The PC is the first certification to prove your level of golfing proficiency.  This PC may allow you to play on a golf course in Singapore or Malaysia, depending on club rules.  The official golfing proficiency is a Handicap maintained by the Singapore Golf Association, or your home golf club. A Handicap allows you to play on all golf courses.  A Handicap can range from 0-24 for men and 0-36 for ladies. If you play an average score of 90 on an 18 hole course, your handicap is 90-72=18. So you are basically an 18 handicapper. Well, other than playing on the course, you can practice on the driving range (many people standing in a row and hitting balls in the same direction). Complete public driving ranges locations are available on at http://www.justteeit.com/directory/ranges/ .

8.    Are there any rules or etiquettes in Golf?

Golf is touted as the number one gentlemen game. Although rules are aplenty and there are no officials to judge on a social game, it is the golfer’s attitude, honesty and integrity that enforce him to abide by the rules. Golf displays one’s character and personality through putting a person in different circumstances. His response to these situations reflects his poise and depth as a person.  Etiquette in golf makes the game enjoyable and creates respect for others and yourself.  Without sportsmanship, winning is absolutely nothing. Examples of some etiquettes are, silence when a fellow golfer is making a stroke, do not hit a ball until you are sure that the golfer in front are out of range, never take a practice swing in the direction of another golfer. http://www.randa.org/ is the link to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews Golf Rules.
